South Gloucestershire Conservatives have said the decision by the Liberal Democrat–Labour administration to introduce 30 minutes of free parking is clear evidence they are backtracking after mounting pressure from residents and businesses.
While the move has been acknowledged as a small step, Conservatives say it is proof that the administration knows its parking charges are damaging our local high streets and driving people away.
South Gloucestershire Conservative Group Leader, Cllr Liz Brennan said:
“This is a clear backtrack. It shows the Liberal Democrats and Labour know their parking charges are having a devastating impact on local businesses and our town centres.”
“But let’s be honest — 30 minutes free doesn’t fix the problem. This is still a stealth tax on residents, who under this council, are paying more and getting less.”
Conservatives argue that at a time when families are struggling with the cost of living, higher parking charges are forcing people to think twice about visiting their local high street.
“Residents are working harder and feeling the squeeze, instead of supporting them, these charges are pushing people away from our town centres — the complete opposite of what we should be doing.” Cllr Brennan added.
The Conservative Group has consistently opposed the introduction of parking charges, warning they would harm footfall and undermine small businesses.
They are now calling for free parking periods and a strategy that genuinely supports local shops and economic growth.
“Our high streets are the backbone of our communities. If we want them to survive and thrive, we need policies that bring people in — not drive them away.”
The Conservative Group will continue to push for changes that support residents, protect local businesses, and revitalise town centres across South Gloucestershire.
