Petition launched calling on South Gloucestershire Council to repaint faded markings outside St Michael’s Primary School before pupils return
South Gloucestershire Council is facing calls to urgently repaint the school road markings outside St Michael’s Primary School before the new school term begins, with campaigners warning that action should not be delayed until children are already back on the school run.
With pupils set to return within days, campaigners say the Council has a narrow window of opportunity to address the markings and ensure motorists are given a clear visual warning that they are approaching a primary school.
The school markings are intended to alert drivers to the presence of children and encourage motorists to slow down and exercise additional caution.
A petition has now been launched calling on South Gloucestershire Council to prioritise the work and complete it before the start of the new term.
Cllr Keith Cranney said:
“South Gloucestershire Council needs to act before a child is hurt.
“We are just days away from the start of the new school term. Parents will soon be walking their children to and from St Michael’s Primary School, and motorists will once again be navigating the roads around the school at the busiest times of the day.
“The markings are there for a reason. They provide a clear warning to drivers that they are approaching a school and need to slow down and take extra care.
“This is not an unreasonable demand. Repainting road markings is a basic piece of maintenance, and residents should not have to launch a petition simply to get safety markings outside a primary school brought back up to an appropriate standard.
“The Council knows the new term is approaching. It knows children will be using these roads. The question is: will it act now, or will it wait until the school term is underway?
“We are asking South Gloucestershire Council to get this work done before the school gates reopen.
“There should be no need to wait for an accident or a near miss before action is taken. When children's safety is concerned, prevention must always be the priority.
“I am asking residents to sign our petition and share it with their friends, family and neighbours. The stronger the local voice, the harder it will be for the Council to ignore this straightforward request.”
