Cllr Liz Brennan, the Conservative Group’s Lead Member on the Strategic Sites Delivery Committee, said: “It’s a real shame that a gigantic housing estate of more than 500 properties will now be built in Charfield, on what is mainly agricultural land.
“The application received more than 400 objections from residents, many of which cited concerns about the lack of local infrastructure, the destruction of the countryside, increased traffic problems and the fear that the village of Charfield will become a town.
“The new development will not feature any new dental or GP services, putting local health provision under further strain, and the schools won’t realistically be able to meet future needs, forcing children to commute to other schools in South Gloucestershire.
“This development is unsustainable, and my Conservative Group colleagues and I simply couldn’t support the proposal. For us, the harms of this development far outweigh the benefits.
“We voted against it to ensure the residents of Charfield have a voice.”
