Conservatives call for action on ‘dangerous’ Wick Wick roundabout

Wick Wick Roundabout

The Wick Wick roundabout in Downend is dangerous and action needs to be taken before an accident takes place, Conservative councillors say.

It comes amid a series of recent complaints from local residents about the temporary measures currently in place at the Wick Wick roundabout in Downend.

Cllr Liz Brennan, Deputy Leader of the opposition Conservative Group on South Gloucestershire Council and the local representative for Frenchay and Downend, spoke about the problems on BBC Radio Bristol this morning and called on the council to take immediate action.

The temporary roadworks at the roundabout have caused confusion for motorists, with numerous reports of near misses with pedestrians. This is due to the traffic lights having been turned off and drivers mistaking the green light on the temporary pedestrian crossing for a traffic light.

Speaking on the radio, Liz said that she has been in touch with local residents about the issue and has been in talks with the council’s Highways team to get the issue sorted as quickly as possible.

Cllr Liz Brennan said: “The temporary measures currently in place at the Wick Wick roundabout are extremely dangerous and need to be fixed as a matter of urgency.

“The current arrangements are very confusing for motorists and pedestrians alike, and residents have already reported a number of near misses.

“I’ve raised this issue with officers as a top priority and will keep pushing until improvements are made.

“I am calling on the council’s administration to recognise the seriousness of this issue and implement a solution as quickly as possible.”

Regrettably, nobody from the council’s current Liberal Democrat/Labour coalition administration was available to join Liz on Radio Bristol to explain what has gone wrong at the roundabout.

Liz is encouraging residents to send their complaints to Cllr Chris Willmore, the Cabinet member ultimately responsible for highways projects.

The temporary measures at the roundabout are part of a series of roadworks to enhance facilities for buses, walking, wheeling and cycling on the A4174.
