CITY CONSERVATIVES UNVEIL CHARTER FOR CHANGE!

Bristol Conservatives have committed themselves to a raft of measures which will put citizens at the heart of decision-making in the run up to the 4th June local elections.

Central to their pledges is a city referendum on the introduction of road tolls - which Lib Dem, Labour and Green councillors are keen to foist on the city's motorists.

Other top Tory priorities include American-style “yellow bus” home-to-school transport; revived suburban rail stations; defending the green belt and open spaces from dangerous development; and fighting to reverse the Labour Government's plans to downgrade Frenchay Hospital.

Conservative leader Councillor Richard Eddy said: “During the current campaign, we are finding widespread and deep disillusionment with the Labour Party on the doorstep. Under their reign - and that of minority Lib Dem Administrations - Bristol has missed too many opportunities.

“Electors are proving very receptive to the Conservative charter-for-change. We have a distinctive range of policies which show clear blue water between us and the tax-and-spend parties competing in June's local elections.

“We want an end to the Council's stifling central education bureaucracy which has failed parents and pupils who rely on our secondary schools. Conservatives will put an end to the crisis in school places and build a new secondary school to serve Northwest Bristol.

“We have a clear and unique message - 'No Say No Pay' - on our political opponents' plans to the introduction of road tolls without first holding a city referendum. We will also oppose 'pay-to-park' pilots being implemented which do not command local support.

“The anti-car policies of successive Labour and Lib Dem Administrations have been disastrous for the travelling public and have actually increased the problem of chronic congestion.

“Our plans to improve the city's railway service, roll-out school buses and get tough with the principal bus operator will ensure a fairer deal for the travelling public.

“Conservatives have opposed the imposition of 'pay-as-you-throw' charges on household rubbish and we will restore weekly waste collections in parts of the city where there is a clear demand.

“The Council election on 4th June will provide a clear choice between 30 years of discredited Lib-Lab misrule and a dynamic Conservative Party determined to put Bristol first. This will be change Bristolians can believe in.”
