Action demanded to curb Bishopsworth yobs menace!

Local residents in Bishopsworth are demanding a Dispersal Order to help break-up gangs of up to 100 youths who regularly congregate in the area.

Shop-keepers and householders living near the bottom of St Peter's Rise, behind Bishopsworth Library, say the issue has escalated since Christmas and they want urgent action taken by the police before lighter nights make
matters worse.

Ironically, the trouble spot is situated only 50 yards from the doorstep of Bishopsworth Police Station.

A local resident, who asked not to be named, said: "My family and I have lived around here for nearly forty years and I have never known it as bad as this.

"Scores of rowdy yobs regularly gather behind the library, with bottles of drink to hand, and decent people are scared of going out after dark."

Conservative Group Leader Councillor Richard Eddy, who lives nearby and represents the area, say the problem has become intolerable. He and fellow Bishopsworth Councillor Kevin Quartley are pressing for the designation of a Dispersal Area so that groups of more than two youngsters can be moved on.

Cllr Eddy said: "The area around Bishopsworth Library has historically attracted young people late at night, especially at weekends.

"However, in recent times, we have seen groupings of up to 100 youths congregating at this point, milling around menacingly.

"Binge-drinking is a regular feature of these gatherings and the police have recovered a large variety of weapons.

"Local residents are fed up with the situation and we are presently collecting evidence, in partnership with the police, to secure a Dispersal Order."

Councillor Kevin Quartley added: "There is no doubt that this problem has definitely got much worst since the closure of Bedminster Down Boys' Club a couple of years ago.

"The Bishopsworth area is very poorly served with facilities for young people and Richard and I are working with local people to improve this state of affairs.

"Nevertheless, shop-keepers and residents desperately need reassurance and the sooner we secure a Dispersal Order the better."
