Bristol East

Adeela Shafi

Adeela was born in Bristol in 1972 and has lived and worked in Bristol all her life. Having attended the local schools and college Adeela went to Bristol University obtaining a degree in Psychology. She went back to lecture at Soundwell College at the age of 22 where she had obtained her A Levels just four years earlier. Currently, Adeela is lecturing at the University of the West of England in the Department of Education.

In November 2007 Adeela received an award from Leeds Metropolitan University for Excellence in Education presented to her at the Asian Power100 Awards.

Since the age of 16 Adeela has involved herself in voluntary work starting off as a Youth Worker for a Charity Organisation in St Pauls Bristol for disadvantaged young girls. She has continued her work in the community with voluntary supplementary schools working with them to train and deliver quality educational experiences for the children in their care. Theresa May MP nominated Adeela for a prestigious award having visited the projects in Bristol.

Adeela hopes to be an inspiration for more young people from all backgrounds and walks of life to join politics and is determined that she represent the interests of all people such as working parents who juggle a family and working life, students and young people who strive to do better and all those ordinary people who just want the best for themselves and their families.

Adeela became interested in politics after many people around her suggested she would make an excellent and refreshing MP. Because of her ability to recognise where things might have gone wrong and her 'let's do this' attitude meant that it was not long before a political career was beckoning.

Adeela's political strength is her ability to put herself in the other person's position and see things from the inside rather than looking in on issues and making judgements from afar. Being known in the constituency before her selection, Adeela retains the sentiment of the ordinary person on the street which is part of her appeal to the electorate.

Adeela has made real progress in engaging local people in Bristol East from young families in Children's Centres, older people through Age Concern Bristol, local secomdary schools, the police, businesses and the local fire and rescue services.   Having a joined up approach with local agencies, facilities and users means that the residents in Bristol East will get a better deal through improved communication in services.

Adeela is working on a number of projects in Bristol East. Visit www.adeelashafi.com for further information.
